Osteopathy for Back Pain in Nottingham

Back pain treatment that starts by listening — not jumping to fixes

If you’re dealing with back pain, there’s a good chance you’ve already been given advice, exercises, or reassurance that didn’t quite land.

You may have been told:

  • it’s “just muscular”
  • it’s “wear and tear”
  • to strengthen your core
  • to stretch more
  • to sit up straighter

And yet… the pain is still there, or keeps coming back.

At Adam Richmond – Osteopath (The Pain Man), back pain treatment starts somewhere simpler and more important:

by properly understanding what’s going on for you as an individual.

Pain doesn’t equal damage — but it still needs to be taken seriously

One of the most common misunderstandings about back pain is that the amount of pain tells you how badly you’re injured.

In reality, that often isn’t true.

People can be in severe pain — sometimes barely able to move — without having done serious damage to their body. Muscle spasm is a good example: it can be intense, frightening, and disabling, yet still settle quickly with the right approach.

That said, reassurance only matters after you’ve been properly listened to and assessed.

I don’t dismiss pain.
I don’t reassure by guessing.

I take the time to understand what’s happening, what’s worrying you, and what needs to be ruled out — before we talk about what it means.

Why longer appointments matter

Your first appointment is 1 hour 20 minutes.

That’s not a marketing gimmick. It’s because rushing this stuff leads to missed details and generic advice — and that’s exactly what many people are fed up with.

That time allows us to:

  • go through your story properly
  • understand what you’ve tried and how it’s affected you
  • explore what you’re worried about (often the most important part)
  • build a clear working hypothesis
  • test that hypothesis with movement, strength, and functional assessment

Only once that all makes sense — to both of us — do we move on to treatment and advice.

Sometimes, understanding is the most important part of the session.

Hands-on treatment is important — but it’s not the starting point

Hands-on osteopathic treatment is a core part of what I do.

People often feel better after good hands-on work, and that improvement matters. It tells us useful things about how sensitive your system is and what’s likely to help next.

But hands-on treatment works best when it’s:

  • based on a clear understanding of your problem
  • combined with explanation, not mystery
  • used to calm things down, not “fix damage”

I’m not putting torn muscles back together or realigning bones.
What we’re doing is reducing sensitivity, restoring movement, and creating the conditions for progress.

For long-standing or recurring back pain: what’s usually been missing

If you’ve had back pain on and off for years, you may feel fragile.
You may be cautious about bending, lifting, or even sitting “wrong”.

Many people in this situation have had:

  • multiple treatments
  • different labels
  • different exercises
  • different explanations

What’s often missing isn’t effort or motivation — it’s the right understanding and the right dose.

Generic exercises fail not because exercise doesn’t work, but because:

  • they weren’t specific to you
  • the starting point was wrong
  • the dose was too much, too soon

Everyone can get stronger if you start at the right level.
Getting that level right — especially after years of pain — takes experience and attention.

That’s where I spend my time.

Education that actually changes things

One of the fastest ways to help someone with back pain is changing how they understand it.

Not through lectures.
Not through slogans.

But by listening carefully and then explaining their experience back to them — often more clearly than they’ve been able to articulate themselves.

Once someone genuinely understands what’s happening, fear drops.
Movement becomes safer.
Setbacks become less frightening.

And progress becomes possible.

Who this approach is for

This back pain treatment approach works best for people who:

  • want honest answers
  • value being properly listened to
  • are open to understanding their pain differently
  • don’t want generic advice
  • want treatment and a plan

It’s especially helpful for:

  • acute back pain that feels severe or frightening
  • recurring back pain that never quite settles
  • people who feel they’ve “tried everything”

Who it’s not for

This probably isn’t the right fit if you:

  • want to skip assessment and go straight to treatment
  • are only looking for a quick fix without understanding
  • want a one-size-fits-all exercise sheet
  • want certainty where none exists

Hands-on treatment matters — but it has to be earned by understanding first.

What I want you to leave thinking

If you come to see me for back pain, the aim is that you leave feeling:

  • properly listened to
  • reassured for the right reasons
  • hopeful
  • clearer about what’s happening
  • confident that progress is possible

Many people leave thinking:

“That was genuinely worthwhile — and I finally understand what’s been going on.”
